Come join us for a heartfelt celebration of the life of Rev. Donald Jay . We will gather at the Collier Street United Church to honor and remember a beloved member of our community. Let's share stories, memories, and laughter as we pay tribute to a life well-lived. All are welcome to attend this special event. We look forward to seeing you there!
Obituary :
On April 30, 2024, Donald Ross Jay passed away peacefully with his family by his side, holding the hand of his wife Christina Jay (Murphy). He was born in Holstein, Ontario and would have celebrated his 96th birthday on May 7, 2024.
Don was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Christina; their three children Donna (Todd), Dianne (Barry), Karen (Rick) and grandchildren: Kristy (Brady), Corey (Meaghan), Jayme (Stella), Christopher (Jaimee), Jodi (Brian), great grandchildren: Kylie, Charleigh, Lexi, Scottie, and Everlee. Don is lovingly remembered by his sister Evelyn, sister-in-law Mary, brother-in-law Dave, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Don was predeceased by his father Rev. Charles Jay, mother Luella McPherson, brother Douglas (Ruth), sisters Marion and Dorothy (Ken), grandson Christopher Allison, and nephew David; mother-in-law Mary (John), in-laws George, Annie, Jim (Phyllis), and John (Louise). Don graduated from the University of Toronto with his master’s in divinity and was ordained into the United Church of Canada on June 5, 1954. In 1982, he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Toronto, recognizing his work as a pastor and leader, dedicated to the church and community. Don served in various churches: Peace River, Alta and in Ontario - Hastings, Arden, Mountain Grove and Henderson, Peterborough, Uxbridge, Barrie, Brampton, returning to Barrie as Interim Minister and Minister of Pastoral Care. He was involved with the church Provincially, Nationally, and Internationally in the Middle East and Germany. He was honored to be Minister Emeritus at both Central United Church and Collier St. United Church. He was actively involved in the Barrie Community serving on boards such as the YMCA, Royal Victoria Hospital, Association of Community Living, and was a Member of Golden K, Rotary, the Masons and On-Call for Telecare. Under his leadership the Barrie Meals on Wheels program originated in the Central United Church kitchen by the UCW. Dearest to his heart were summers spent with family and friends at Moira Lake where he enjoyed hours of laughter, family gatherings and water fun. Don is remembered for his exceptional kindness and generosity of spirit. Many people were welcomed into our home and became part of our extended family. He would lovingly assist any family member, friend, or stranger in need to the extent of coming home without shoes or jackets. He received thanks and accolades with a humble and grateful disposition. He was protective of his family and expressed his love and gratitude constantly. He was a true gentlemen and scholar whose main message in life was the love of God, family, friends, and community.
A celebration of life service will be held at Collier St. United Church on June 19, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., with a time of sharing and reception immediately following the service. The family extends thanks to all staff at Victoria Village Manor, Barrie for their loving care of dad and to his faithful visitors and friends.
